What’s in a Name: Why is the New Venue Called the Music Box?

The Update
At the core of the Winspear Expansion is a new venue called the Music Box. This remarkable 550 seat venue is going to be an acoustically superior mid-sized performance space in our city – and one of the most common questions we are asked is how our venue got its name.
When you think of a music box, you likely picture a mechanical instrument that plays pre-recorded music using a rotating cylinder or disc. These intricate devices were designed to bring music to life through carefully engineered movement. The Music Box venue at the Winspear Centre carries that same spirit of transformation and precision. Inside our new venue, a fully customizable seating system activates at the touch of a button, allowing an entire reconfiguration of the performance space in only 27 minutes. One moment, the Music Box could present as a flat floor for a high-energy dance party; the next, the seating could rise up to the balcony for a classical quintet performance. Like its namesake, it’s designed to “play” different depending on what’s needed, creating the perfect setting for every performance.
Outside of the name referencing the mechanics of the space, the Music Box venue is also a nod to the acoustic isolation of the space. The Music Box venue is surrounded by a four-inch gap that runs through its floors, walls, and ceiling. This gap ensures that the sounds vibrations created by music stay contained within the space, and any noises outside of the venue are stopped before they can impact the acoustics. The same gap surrounds every performance space at the Winspear Centre. Currently, the Winspear exists as a 4-building complex – once the Expansion is completed, we will be an 8-building complex, with every performance protected by the same 4-inch gap.
Technically speaking, the Music Box is a box within a box. Beyond the 4-inch gap, the Music Box utilizes neoprene rubber to further enhance the acoustics of the space. Thousands of neoprene rubber pads are woven into the Music Box’s structure from floor to ceiling, insulating key areas and creating that “box-within-a-box” effect. These man-made rubber pads create an extra barrier of sound isolation that ensures that the new venue has the same incredible acoustic quality as the existing Winspear Centre concert hall.
The Music Box is a name that speaks to both the history and innovation that goes into music making, both at the Winspear Centre and around the world – that being said, there are so many other acoustic features of the space that will make the Winspear Expansion an excellent place to make music. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project continues to take shape.
